Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, in Birmingham, Alabama, is regarded as one of the most haunted industrial sites in the United States, serving as a massive iron and steel resonator for the intense physical toil and tragedy of the post-Reconstruction era. The most dominant presence is that of James “Slag” Wormwood, a sadistic foreman from the early 1900s whose aggressive energy is said to linger near the highest sections of the furnaces.
Investigators and sensitive individuals often report physical sensations such as being pushed, sudden temperature spikes, or the heavy scent of burning coal and sulfur. The “Big Alice” furnace and the dark tunnels beneath the facility are noted as primary hotspots for auditory anomalies, including phantom whistles and the rhythmic clanging of ghostly machinery.
The Sloss furnaces have been investigated by many famous paranormal researches including Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures Crew.
