Forty Foot Hole, located within the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Lawton, Oklahoma, is a deep circular basin carved into ancient Mount Scott Granite by the erosive force of West Cache Creek. This granite is some of the oldest exposed rock in the United States, dating back over five hundred million years to a period of intense volcanic activity.

Registered 02.16.12 by Vortex Hunter vh97 – Forty Foot Hole is a natural depression located at the northwest end of the Narrows Canyon. This site, as its name implies, looks like a deep hole in the surrounding canyon. Many waterfalls are created as Cache Creek flows over the Permian-era formation, making the site a prime destination for hikers during the summer months, when they visit to bask in the cool air and the natural ambiance created by the sounds of the waterfall along the rim of the canyon. It is located at the northwest end of the Narrows Canyon in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Southwest Oklahoma.
27 Jan 2024 – Hi, I just found your site by searching Wichita mountains vortex. I think this photo might add to the evidence pile. This photo is of the central axis of what I believe to be an enormous helix. I took it in the Charon’s Garden area. That’s as specific as I can recall. Someday soon I hope to return to do more exploring and photo taking. This structure is so large, it’s nearly impossible to get enough of it in the frame while standing on the ground. Really impressive! – Dave
