Been there about 3 or 4 times as Scout in the late 70’s. Saw Van Tassel’s dome and the outside of a structure built under Giant Rock. We would camp in the mouth of the rocky volcano looking mountain behind the rock. Our Scout master would tell stories about Van Tassel’s encounters, I believe, and the area did seem to have a different feel. I had the sense that the rocks had iron in them but that may be because they had a dark color like volcanic rock. On one of the outings we saw a strip of lights across the valley on the east side, Giant Rock being on the West side of the dry lake. It was hard to tell the distance but the lights were in a straight line horizontal to the ground, perpendicular to us, flashed from left to right (north to south) and appeared be several miles long. Since we believed that was part of 29 Palms Marine base, we considered it some sort of military apparatus.
